University of Science and Technology MISIS held a school for young physicists SQH-2022

eastmag sqh 2022The second international school “Superconducting Quantum Hardware, SQH-2022” (Superconducting Quantum Hardware, SQH-2022), organized by MISIS University with the support of the Russian Science Foundation and QRate Company, was held in Kazan from August 22 to 27, 2022. The event was held within the framework of the VIII Eurasian Symposium “Trends in Magnetism” (EASTMAG 2022) in a mixed format.

The event was attended by more than a hundred young scientists and novice researchers in the field of physics, engineering, quantum technologies, including graduate students, master’s and undergraduate students of leading Russian technical universities.

The school’s program included lectures by leading Russian and foreign experts in the field of hybrid nanostructures, superconducting digital electronics and topological quantum computing. Seminars on the main directions of SQH-2022 and a poster session in the format of a free discussion of authors, lecturers and the organizing committee of the school were also held.

Scientists Discover New Type of Quasiparticle

Russian scientists have experimentally proved the existence of a new type of quasiparticle — previously unknown excitations of coupled pairs of photons in qubit chains. This discovery could be a step towards disorder-robust quantum metamaterials. The study was published in Physical Review B.

Physicists made photons be friends with magnons

A team of scientists from NUST MISIS and MIPT have developed and tested a new platform for realization of the ultra-strong photon-to-magnon coupling. The proposed system is on-chip and is based on thin-film hetero-structures with superconducting, ferromagnetic and insulating layers. This discovery solves a problem that has been on the agenda of research teams from different countries for the last 10 years, and opens new opportunities in implementing quantum technologies. The study was published in the highly ranked journal Science Advances.

“Machine Learning for Chaotic Systems” by Prof. George Tsironis

This talk is part of IACS’s 2019 symposium on the Future of Computation: “Data Science at the Frontier of Discovery: Machine Learning in the Physical World”.

Presenter: George Tsironis, Department of Physics, University of Crete

A universal design for superconducting qubits has been created

The collaboration of scientists from NUST MISIS and Russian Quantum Center in Russia, the University of London and the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington in the United Kingdom, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and IPHT Jena in Germany, as well as contributions from MIPT and Skoltech (Russia), has managed to create a fundamentally new qubit based not on the Josephson transition, which has gaps in the superconductor, but on a continuous superconducting nano-wire. The research has been published in Nature Physics.

Quantum Biology: Superconducting Qubits Help to Explain Photosynthesis

An international team of quantum physicists from NUST MISIS, the Russian Quantum Center, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, with the active participation of the head of our lab Prof. Alexey Ustinov, have learned how to simulate processes which can help to decipher the mechanisms of photosynthesis. By creating a system based only on a single superconducting qubit at almost absolute zero temperature, scientists have managed to propel the quantum mechanical modeling of natural processes to a new level. The research article on the results was published in Nature Communications.

A paper “Qubit lattice coherence induced by electromagnetic pulses in superconducting metamaterials” published in a journal Scientific Reports that is a part of Nature group

A paper “Qubit lattice coherence induced by electromagnetic pulses in superconducting metamaterials” by researches of our laboratory Zoran Ivic, Nikolaos Lazarides and Georgios Tsironis published in a journal Scientific Reports that is a part of Nature group. The article is available in web page Publications. A superconducting quantum metamaterial comprising superconducting charge qubits loaded periodically on a superconducting transmission line has been investigated theoretically and numerically. In the paper it is demonstrated that two remarkable quantum coherent optical phenomena, i.e., self-induced transparency and Dicke-type
superradiance, may occur during light-pulse propagation in this quantum metamaterial. Also it is demonstrated that the propagating electromagnetic pulses may induce quantum coherent population inversion pulses in the metamaterial.

Our colleagues believe that the experimental confirmation of such effects in superconducting quantum metamaterials may open a new pathway to potentially powerful quantum computing.
